[Piece #3 of the Longing Roots Collection - 그리운 뿌리]

Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) - a popular Korean street food that is associated with childhood memories for many Koreans. My mom would tell me stories of how she often enjoyed cup tteokbokki (rice cakes served in a small cup) at the bunsik(분식) snack bar after school. It was one of her go-to comfort foods growing up in Korea because it was inexpensive and conveniently located near her school.

Growing up as a Korean-American, I didn’t have access to bunsik snack bars, but I still have fond memories of eating my mom’s homemade tteokbokki. We still love tteokbokki, and every time I visit her in Korea, we bond over a bowl together. Tteokbokki is more than just a dish to us; it’s a way to connect our pasts and create new memories together.

About the Longing Roots Collection (그리운 뿌리):

Tiny, playful tributes to my Korean-American upbringing, each creation is an exploration of the moments that shaped my world.
